Childe never struggled to keep the urges of the abyss at bay. Other than his bloodlust and near constant urge for a battle, it was never a problem to just lock the needs away.
That changes after he found out that Zhongli was Morax, the very archon he had to steal the gnosis from. The abyss latches onto him like a leech and he learns the consequences of ignoring his feelings.

Between surviving three months with the monsters of the Abyss at age fourteen, fighting his way up from square one through the ranks of the Fatui to his current position, and maintaining his façade as "The Greatest Toy Salesman in Snezhnaya" in the eyes of his youngest and most mischievous brother; yes, it would take a lot to find him in a truly tight spot. Waking up in a body that existed nearly 3,700 years ago in the land that had yet to become Liyue? That would be disorienting even for a god. And speaking of gods, the only person he can turn to happens to be one. Here's hoping that the younger Zhongli is as friendly as the one Childe has grown close to.
