"The old world is dying, the new world struggles to be born: Now is the time of monsters." -Antonio Gramsci I was never normal. I could always feel them, everyone around me. Their fears, their desires, all that they were, I could feel. It was one thing out in the sticks, the people were happy and there weren't too many. But I thought NYU would be a wise choice. Now Manhattan screams at me, a city of terror. A city of despair. I thought I was alone in my strangeness but... A true monster revealed itself and I knew why the city was screaming. It was a city of monsters, and I was one of them. But maybe... I could be more? Elizabeth Crowl, an empath trapped in a nightmare. She is caught between hope and despair. To succumb to the screaming city around her or to make it better? James Geist, a man who feeds off and communes with death itself. A man fighting so that he never has to be strong again. A monster playing at a hero or the truest definition of one? Will they be able to emerge from this age of monsters?

She was mine long before she knew it. I had been raised in shadows, in a world where power was survival and choice was an illusion. But then there was her. She slipped into my life unexpectedly and defiantly, her eyes too bright for a town like this one. She was unafraid of what lay beneath the surface, thinking she could walk away and resist the pull. But every step she took only bound her tighter to me. She was delicate but stubborn, fierce enough to face what others ran from, even if she didn't fully see it yet. She was the only thing I had ever chosen. I would break anything to keep her, everything, even her illusions of freedom. Because in a world that offered no choices, she became my one certainty. I will carve that truth into the world, with blood, if I have to. R.
