Seventeen-year-old Malika Legend, a promising boxer, has always struggled to escape the shadow of her heavyweight champion father. When her family relocates from Dorchester to Santa Monica, Malika seizes the opportunity for reinvention.

Quitting boxing and enrolling in a traditional school for the first time, she hopes for a fresh start. However, her father's past quickly catches up with her in the form of Taryn Rawlins, a vengeful girl whose father died in the ring fighting Malika's dad.

As tensions escalate, Malika realizes that she and Taryn are on an inevitable collision course. There's only one place this conflict can end: in the boxing ring, where it all began.

Jourdan Mathews has a secret, and she knows she needs to take this one to the grave. * * * Her life was never complicated: a college student with a close family, good friends, and a plan for her future as a doctor. Had that night had never happened, she might even have been called ordinary. But we're not made by ordinary moments. Now in her senior year, Jourdan is in freefall after a catalyzing summer that turned everything upside-down. Her friends know she's in trouble, and her parents hope they've done enough to save her, but Jourdan doesn't feel anything anymore. They say moving on happens slowly, but something needs to change fast before life moves on without her. Ryder Harris considers his life to be the farthest thing from "ordinary." He isn't just the kind-of-good basketball player that made him popular in high school. He is the kind-of-great that comes along once in a generation, a fact that has propelled him on a course which only attempts to reach for the stars. If you ask him, this isn't luck or special talent. No, Ryder Harris makes a point to focus himself, to remain undistracted. He's got priorities, and at the very top of his list is being drafted into the NBA. That dream is very close to becoming a reality his senior year, so close he can almost taste it. But the universe has a nasty habit of giving us what we need, not what we want. * * * part I - Jourdan & Ryder * * * Every Saint Needs a Sinner. Copyright. © May 2022. All Rights Reserved.

Stella and the Boxer

50 parts Complete

The Wattys 2014 "Undiscovered Gem" Stella Henry is afraid of a lot of things. As a child, her simple, comfortable home life did not prepare her for the sort of people whom she would meet as a younger teenager. Now eighteen and a freshman at Clemson University, Stella meets Charlie, who, like her, has long been keeping others at bay. Though his disposition is kind and gentle, Charlie is a boxer, and his world only reminds Stella of elements of her past she would like to forget. When both realize that they have a safe place in one another, they start to overcome their fear of other people, and of letting them get close enough to matter. In many ways, this is a story about allowing people to matter to our lives, and about meaning something to them, in turn. At some point in your day, in your routine, in your life, you will matter to someone. That is a special kind of power, do be careful with it. "We love people not so much for the good they've done us, as for the good we've done them." Leo Tolstoy, War and Peace
