His fingers felt cold against the metal of the bars. Standing at the top of the ladder, looking up. The light bent in murky waves, rolling over the glass once, twice, rocking back, always changing. If he squinted enough, he could make out little spots of white dancing far, far above them. The world through the glass looked dunked in translucent green, maybe blue.
He swallowed dryly around the knot in his throat, raising shaking fingertips to the cold glass surface.
The edges of the glass felt just slightly wet with single drops of water rolling down to beyond his sight in between the metal plates.
"Is someone out there?"
Cellbit turned his head, feeling each last droplet of warm dripping from his face to somewhere in the floor.
Pac stared at him, dreading the answer.
And he stared back.
