From making new friends to not being mentally stable, to needing to confess, to past traumas that continue to haunt Marshall. He had to do whatever it took to overcome these obstacles. With Marshall gone, he knew that Everest and the Lab would spend more time with each other. Thus he had to confess. He knew that he had to make a move before the lab would.
