Sanjita knew this would end. She had told herself not to get attached. Not to hope.
But standing here, pressed against the cool wood of her door, with Avyant's palm flat beside her head, caging her in, she realizes-she was a fool.

"You've been avoiding me,"
he murmurs, his breath warm against her temple. "Why?"
She swallows hard, fingers curling into fists. "I haven't."
"Liar," he breathes, voice a dark promise. He tilts her chin up, forcing her to meet his gaze. "Tell me what's wrong, Rose."
Her heart clenches at the name, at the way he says it now-not with mockery, but something else. Something that terrifies her.
"Nothing," she whispers, though her body betrays her, leaning into him like it knows something she won't admit.
Avyant studies her, his thumb grazing the corner of her mouth.
"You forget," he murmurs, dipping his head so his lips are just above hers, tormenting.
"I know when you're lying."
She sucks in a sharp breath. He's too close. He shouldn't be this close. Not when this marriage is ending. Not when the mere thought of walking away feels like a knife twisting inside her.
"Say it,"
he whispers, his lips brushing hers in the barest of touches.
"Say you don't want this, and I'll step back."
She should. She should end this before it begins.
But when he finally closes the distance, when his lips capture hers in a kiss that steals her breath, she shatters.
Because for the first time since their wedding, she allows herself to want him.
