Every year, twelve teenagers are chosen for the Tolmirous Challenge, a legendary competition that tests bravery and magic. The Destinies, breathtaking beings who were once human, are the ones who the the chosen children are partnered up with. They shimmer with an otherworldly beauty and their eyes seem to hold the secrets of forgotten times. But for Adelaide, the challenge is her only chance to win a single wish, a wish that could bring her mother back.

There's one twist: winning depends on who you're paired with. And fate isn't exactly on Adelaide's side. She's stuck with Drystan, a Destiny shrouded in rumors of bad luck. He's like a storm cloud compared to the other Destinies' , and everyone whispers warnings about him. Yet, Adelaide is determined, she refuses to let fear stop her.

As Adelaide ventures deeper into the challenge, secrets start to unravel. The Destinies' smiles don't seem as genuine anymore, and a cold dread creeps into her heart. The whispers turn into a shocking truth: the Destinies aren't benevolent guardians, but something much darker. And Adelaide, the ordinary girl with an extraordinary love for her mother, might hold the key to an ancient magic. This magic could shatter the illusion the Destinies have created and set the world on fire.

Ice flooded my veins as the realization of who he was hit me. It must have been evident on my face because the man in front of me let out a dark laugh. "Oh dear, you didn't realize you were talking to a royal, did you darling?" he crooned. Not just any royal. Kesserian Cinis. The recently coronated king and ruler over the Ember Court. I forgot how to breathe, my mind whirring as it tried to figure out how I could have been so stupid as to let this happen. *************************************************** Wren Heatherfield is on the run. Having turned 18, she is now in danger of becoming selected for the Garner, a deadly game in which the six kings who rule over her continent take eighteen non-magical girls and make them fight for their lives. But the Garner isn't the only thing capable of killing her.
