Leaving a letter behind, Victor Waverley embarks on a Grand Tour a week before his education at Oxford is supposed to begin, thereby putting the Waverley family's name at stake.

Sir Walter Waverley is determined to send a replacement for Victor to Oxford, and it comes in the form of his youngest child Clara Waverley. Known outsmart all her siblings, Clara's immense knowledge and wit make her the perfect choice. Although now cross-dressed as Victor, navigating a male-dominated Oxford is not easy, especially when her inn partner is the notorious rake Christopher Fanshawe.

Christopher Fanshawe, the heir to Cedarbrook Estate, is the man every woman desires. His stay at Oxford has been far too long, and is resulting in nothing, except a delay in his duties back home. He finds something odd in the Victor he sees, something that nobody else ever seems to notice, but he cannot point to either.
