Kai'awa or Kai'awana means "sea's embrace" or "ocean's child" in the Na'vi language, and Kai'awana has been blessed or cursed by the great mother, Eywa, by carrying that title, the ocean's child, or more Eywa's child.

All of the Na'vi have been blessed by Eywa with the gift of life and a connection to her, making them all children of Eywa, but Kai'awana has been called Eywa's child, the ocean's child, ever since she was a baby.

Kai'awana is the eldest daughter and child of Tonowari and Ronal, the Olo'eyktan, and Tsahik of Awa'atlu, a village of the Metkayina clan, the reef Na'vi. Who live in peace and harmony, keeping out of wars and physical altercations with out-siding Na'vi or sky people. But when Toruk Makto and his family arrive in Awa'atlu, the Metkayina clan is faced with not only out-siding Na'vi but also Na'vi with demon blood.

But Awa can feel something different about them; the Sullys are different, not just by their physical differences but by the way they are connected to Eywa, and Awa can feel that feeling strongest, something similar to a sixth sense, almost, in the Sully children.
