Alison Fisher meets Lauren Macdonald through a fanfiction website and they soon become online friends. This blossoming friendship prompts Ally to leave the cozy comforts of Cedar Rapids far behind and move to the bustling metropolis of New York City, where Lauren, whom she fondly calls 'Mac', lives. Over time, Ally begins falling in love with Mac, and it starts taking a toll on her as she watches her lady love gradually moving forward with her long-time boyfriend, Brad. And yet, there's an unspoken tension between the two women whenever they're together which can't be simplified into gay or straight or like and love. As they draw closer to each other, Ally begins to question whether Lauren is the best thing to ever happen to her or at best, her favourite mistake.
