My contribution to @AnonymousMockingjay 's Hunger Games writing competition! Penn Driscoll was supposed to have the glamorous District Four life; sun-kissed skin, secure financial situation, full belly, and the respect a potential tribute deserved. The only part he did have was the sun-kissed skin. As for financial situation, who would buy fish from a fifteen year old kid? Even though he spent all his time fishing, age was a hurdle he just couldn't jump. Fishing was his life and someday, he'd be the best in the business so long as he didn't get Reaped. Penn would never be a Career nor would he get close to them. His five siblings depended on him too much for him to go away for so long. Besides, he had a brain and knew no glory was worth the risk. A risk he had no choice but to take. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For his sister, Maeve, this was a nightmare came true; not when she was Reaped, but when her twin brother volunteered to go with her. Family was all that mattered to her and no matter what, one of them wouldn't come out alive. In proper District Four fashion, Maeve felt as though hanging on to two boats that were slowly drifting apart and she had no choice but to pick one or let the sea swallow her whole. Maeve had to choose between herself and other siblings or her older brother. Assuming either one of them survived. Maeve had to get back to her younger siblings. Without she or Penn, they wouldn't survive. Maeve had stepped into the role of mother after her's had died giving birth to the youngest of her five siblings. Penn had to become the provider for their family when their father, heartbroken from the loss of his wife, had turned to alcohol for solace and had been trapped in it's snare until he wasn't himself anymore. Without the twins, her family was as good as dead. 1st in #writinggames - 5/3/24 1st in #writingcompetition - 5/3/24
