The first mosquito was feeling anemic. Lack of iron and general weakness. "Damn, I feel lazy," he said. "All these Cambodians barely eat anything. And here we are, starving too."
His mosquito companion chimed in: "I strained my proboscis last night. I aimed for the cheek and hit the bone. They're so thin it's pitiful. I'm leaving this place if it continues."
The two were perched on the dirty toe of a newborn. Dawn was already breaking, but it was still very hot under the blue tarp. A puddle of muddy water was nearby, and a beautiful female Anopheles mosquito was grooming herself in it.
