The stories we cannot escape from shine out like beacons. Nicole used to spend her days steeped in the groaning sounds and labored breaths of medical training. Now, she spends her nights taking slow drags on her cigarette and gazing out her bedroom window in order to forget. But the mushrooms sprouting in her neighbor's yard are the hallucinogenic variety, and soon enough Nicole finds herself reliving the summer Apollo - her childhood best friend - was found dead in the marshes. Initially, everything seems the same, a game she cannot change. Yet another small-town murder. Yet another big-newspaper headline. But in dreams nothing is set in stone. Reality and fantasy intertwine, and Nicole, no longer in the grip of her teenage mind, is determined to reshape them both. But how can someone win when they're up against generational wealth, rancid morals, and powerful fraternal organizations?
