"You are his younger brother I am guessing," she said. "If I were you, I would be feeling pretty upset, confused, possibly angry, and maybe even a little scared," she said......a lump was forming in my throat; I closed my eyes to thwart the tears that were forming. I exhaled long and hard. "I am betting your parents are a little confused too, and they probably haven't told you much about what is actually happening with your brother," she said. Richard's journey from adolescents to adulthood went horribly off track the year his older brother was diagnosed with Schizophrenia. Richard was only in the eighth grade. Brother's Keeper tells the story of young Richard's inability to deal with losing his older brother to a mental illness, while at the same time struggling to handle the other obstacles in his own life. With his parents focused on his older brother's mental illness, Richard is forced to grow up fast and deal with the issues in his life all on his own. Making the transition from middle school to high school, learning about girls, coping with childhood obesity, dealing with racism, feelings of alienation, and strict parents are just some of the problems Richard must overcome alone; that is until a surrogate older brother steps in. ***Brother's Keeper is my first attempt at writing a novel. Previously all of my works have been short stories or poems. After some modest success in the #EWA2017 General Fiction category, I've decided to make some minor edits and repost the original chapters along with some of the later chapters . An Unexpected Moment by caromerri

... that changes everything Sarah was starting her junior year of high school. Looking at herself in the mirror, she saw a pretty average blonde haired, blue eyed, teenager. She was neither in the popular group, nor one of the many cliched outsiders. Sarah was a nobody. She liked to blend in and lay low. It was her way out of not only this town, but her house. No one knew it, but her father was a high functioning alcoholic that often took his anger out on his family. With her older sister now in college, it had turned to her more often. Laying low in general was a good strategy. Across town, Ryan was prepping for his final year in high school. While he wasn't the stereotypical quarterback of the football team, he did fit into the popular crowd. His sports of choice included basketball and soccer, either of which might line him up for a scholarship next year. Ryan had a group of close friends and a lot of adoring acquaintances. It wasn't easy juggling his athletics and keeping the grades up, but he was just that good. The supporting parents didn't hurt either. It might be a cliché romance, but it will be fun to see what the year and beyond holds. ------------------------------------------ This is a story I wrote years ago, or at least partially wrote. As I transcribe it here, I have tried to update it a bit and give the characters/story more depth than what I had when I was younger. Hopefully it all gets pulled together!

He croaks his head and his winning expression makes me think I said something wrong, something to give him the upper hand. „So you took that as an insult, huh? Or were you rather disappointed?", the corners of his lips twitch, almost making him smile and he looks down at me, challengingly. „What? No! Of course I wasn't-" „That's it, isn't it?", he interrupts me and steps closer, if that was even possible. Suddenly he lifts his hand and pushes my chin upwards, ever so gently, so I'm looking right in his eyes, „you wanted me to say... what exactly? That's the reason you came to me when Theo wouldn't leave you alone as well, right? You wanted to be close to me." I wanted to be close to him? He was the one practically pinning me against the wall right now. I press my right pointy finger into the bare skin of his chest, pushing him away from me with it. „I've said it to you once, Nikolai, and I'll say it one more time so even you can comprehend it. You're. Not. That. Damn. Important. Not everyone wants to be close to you. Not everyone cares for you attention. Not everyone, and certainly not me!" And with that I brush past him, not turning around when walking away. I hurry around a corner, until I'm out of his sight. Only then do I allow myself to slow down. Only then do I allow myself to breathe. Only then do I allow myself to touch the part of my jaw where his hand had traced my skin. ~~~ June Lockwood loves to win. Nikolai Coleman cannot afford to loose. When the two of them meet at Everlance Academy, the most elite boarding school for competitive athletes in all of England, it's like stars colliding. It is yet to be discovered whether they will send sparks flying or cause an explosion with irreversible consequences.

Back at home, only a couple years after her parents' divorce, she gets a wedding invitation from her father. In a year full of change, one thing that's been keeping her centered is Atlas. Willow has been liking the same boy for the past two years, a boy who doesn't even know her name, despite her popularity. Now that she's a senior, she wants to make a move, but is scared that he will make assumptions based on rumors and the simple fact she's a cheerleader. So she texts him from an unknown number, hoping that he will fall for her personality. Willow thought she couldn't possibly fall any harder for Atlas, and every day just proves her more and more wrong.
