His jaw tightened as I stepped over the shattered glass, my heels echoing through the silence. Blood decorated the sleeve of my coat like it belonged there.
I stopped just inches from him, tilting my head with the ghost of a smile.

"Who do you think you are, Mr. Parker?"

He opened his mouth.

I didn't let him answer.

A quiet laugh slipped past my lips.

"You seriously thought you could outplay me..." I leaned closer until he had no choice but to meet my eyes. "When that's my job?"

His expression finally changed into a grin of amusement.

This man wasn't my pawn. He was my checkmate.
