rory gatlin doesn't trust the government. they spend too much money, get involved in too many wars, and most of all, they got her baby brother killed and her father thrown in prison for a crime he didn't commit. that was eight years ago. but she's moved on, working as a teacher in a brand new town. at least, until her older brother foster shows up at her door in the middle of the night, begging for her help. he thinks he can prove their father's innocence. but he can't do it alone.

aaron hotchner is struggling. it's the three-year anniversary of his ex-wife's death, the woman he was in love moved to london, and it feels like jack is growing up and he's missing it. jj tells him he should take a vacation. garcia tells him he should visit emily. dave tells him he should try to meet someone new. he thinks they're all being ridiculous. at least, until he walks into his son's classroom and sees her.

to rory, aaron serves a purpose. to aaron, rory is his saving grace.

as rory and foster dig deeper into their brother's murder, they discover something darker, more sinister than they could ever have imagined. it is no longer just about them. aaron has no idea that rory is using him, and she plans to keep it that way. but feelings were never supposed to be involved. and when aaron gets dragged into the mess she's made, rory will have to make a decision: follow her heart or finish the job.

there are people who will do anything and everything to cover their ass. rory is determined to expose them. but it might cost her everything.
