She is in an accident that left a shard of energon in her chest close to her heart. Not that she or the autobots know it's energon yet. You all know Ratchet, the grumpy Autobot medic. You know he isn't exactly "on board" with humans around the base. Or they can have a guardian/charge relationship that they slowly build up to, even when one of them will respond to the other without a word.
