Mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive form of cancer that develops in the thin layer of tissue that covers the internal organs, known as the mesothelium. This cancer is primarily caused by exposure to asbestos fibers, commonly found in older buildings, insulation materials, and certain industrial products. Mesothelioma typically affects the lungs (pleural mesothelioma), but it can also occur in the abdomen (peritoneal mesothelioma), heart (pericardial mesothelioma), or testicles (testicular mesothelioma). Symptoms often do not appear until decades after exposure to asbestos, and they may include chest pain, shortness of breath, abdominal swelling, and unexplained weight loss. Treatment options may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and clinical trials, depending on the stage and location of the cancer. Despite advancements in treatment, mesothelioma remains a challenging disease with a relatively poor prognosis. Early detection and proactive management are crucial for improving outcomes and quality of life for patients.
