When he puts in an application to UMICH, he didn't expect to be accepted, he was only a kid, but when the letter had 'Your place has been granted," in bold letters, he finally realised he had a place in life, and he was slowly getting a family too. Being a kid in a place of older people is hard, especially when you're the only teenager on campus. The boys all took him in as their own, understanding how alone he was in the world.
