To gain intel on the Fire Nation, Sokka joins the army. However, after "defeating a monster" all on his own (Appa), he's given the opportunity to become a palace guard. And though it's risky, he jumps at the opportunity. But he doesn't expect Zuko to be there, and he also doesn't expect him to not recognize him and he also doesn't expect Zuko to take a strange liking to him.

Conflicted and lonely, Zuko spends his days in the palace with only his sister and her friends to talk to. With his mind constantly fighting against itself, a distraction in the form of sword fighting with a guard could be exactly what he needs.
