Sophia Hale spent her entire life surviving. Her father took off before she was born, her mom turned to pills to cope, the pills turned to harder drugs, and her mom's boyfriend would weaponize her addiction in order to pimp her out.  By the time Sophia was 6 CPS gained custody of her after police found her locked in a closet during a raid. 
After that Sophia bounced from foster home to foster home each one being worse than the last until she turned 14 and was placed with the Halstead's; where she met Jay and Will her older brother. It was the first time in forever that Sophia felt like she had a safe,  in a stable home, with protective older brothers and caring guardians. 
Almost a year after being placed with the Halstead's Maria Halstead ended up getting killed in a gang shooting leading CPS to take custody of Sophia again deeming Mr. Halstead unfit to raise 3 teenagers. 
Sophia got placed in home after home until she aged out of the foster care system. She Left Chicago and ended up working undercover with the FBI before returning home to Chicago and taking a job with the intelligence unit. 

What happens when a case in New York brings back the ugly truth of Sophia's childhood along with the man that left before Sophia was even born.

She was taking me out of my house and flying to California because she found out about my intelligence and about my scholarship to CalTech and my living arrangements to the dorms.
