He says, grinning. "No. I can't." I say. My eyes wander down towards his chest. I just now notice that he isn't wearing a shirt. I refocus my eyes back to his face, my cheeks getting hot. "We live in California. How do you not know how to swim? There are beaches everywhere." ___________________________________________ It was the last summer before college. For Rae, this meant making memories with her best friends and vacationing till she forgot the last four miserable years of high school. After taking school too seriously and planning all the right steps for college, Rae takes advantage of the time off. For Grayson, this last summer meant deciding if he really wants to spend the next four years being a star-athlete swimmer in college to please his overbearing father, or pursue his true passion of wildlife and spend the next year traveling the world. He takes a vacation with his friends to get away from it all, hoping he will get lay back and relax. Throughout the book, the main character tries to discover what it means to be alive as a 'lower being' in a new world. Originally, she believes herself to be human until an accident occurs, and she finds herself to be woken up in the middle of what she thought to be some sort of cosplay festival. Oddly enough, these strange creatures weren't human, which she quickly realized after being attacked and nearly killed. Now she's got to learn how to survive in this new, scary environment where everyone's out for her demise. I've learned a lot of the parts in this book relate to real-life events, places in the present, and the past. You'll see a lot of connections between actual human historical events and the goings on in this book. The main character is, above all, head strong and bold. She's unafraid of the social normal and any punishments that come when defying them. ----- My original caption for the story: I had a dream, and it was kinda awesome and slightly romantic. I'll try my best to write down what I remember.
