October Owens (weird name, she knows) always hated her birth month. October is cold and unpredictable, and dead leaves are a bitch. And there's nothing she hates more than the fact that her allergies are the worst in Autumn.

Raised in Seattle by her hippie mother, (hence the name,) October tries to deal with the expectations that she might turn out to be the same person her mom once was--not particularly motivated, promiscuous, and high as a kite. Not to mention pregnant at 19.

Desperately trying to escape her prospective future, October enforces a policy that people call her Tobie, thinking it might be one way to become her own person.

Hey, it might be a guy's name but at least it's better than being called a month.

With the help of her now clean mom and entirely too cynical best friend Howie, October tries to come to terms with her own hippie identity, including the fact that Fall is a part of her.

Besides, everybody knows what can be done with rolled up leaves when they're dry.

Long hours and travel away from her father.
