There was once a man who lived in a quiet shelter, on a mountain.

That man held great power but never left his mountain to go interact with other human beings, as he was afraid of being misunderstood and feared due to his powers.

But one day, a cat came to visit. The man was very shocked by the sudden visitor. The cat confessed that it had been watching the man quite some time, and that it couldn't help but be drawn to him. It expressed its desire to stay by the man's side. And so, the cat held its words and never left the man's side. This made the man very happy.

So happy that the man thought to himself "Wouldn't it be even better to hold a banquet with many more animals ?"

And so the man sent many invitations to his divine banquet, letting them fall from his mountain in a hope to reach out to as many animals of the forest as possible.

Twelve animals as well as the cat and the divine human, celebrated the banquet and loved each other to the point of wishing that no matter the circumstances of their current and future lives, they would always find a way to meet again and hold a banquet once more, for eternity.

That is how the Chinese Zodiac and the Sohma family curse began.

But, there was another animal of the forest below, that wished to be present to the reunion when invited; The crocodile.

After multiple lifetimes of loneliness, it saw opportunity in the invitation that came from the sky.

It left its swamp, crawled as far as it could towards the top of the mountain where something other than food would be waiting. It crawled until it dried out.

Too late for the banquet, it wasn't even halfway through when it stopped having the sufficient energy to move around anymore.

In its final moments the crocodile made a wish.

It wished that at some point, in a future life, no matter how many generations pass, it would attend a banquet in which every other zodiac member would be present and it would cherish them as well as it could.
