Her fingers strained against the stubborn window frame, desperate to grant her escape. With a determined effort, she heaved against it, her muscles straining against the resistance, all the while aware of the ominous rattling at the door. The doorknob trembled in its socket as if possessed, taunting her with each futile attempt to push through.Behind that door, she could hear his enraged voice, screaming at her to open it, his pounding fists matching the rhythm of her racing heart.
Myra's frantic hands tore at the flimsy barrier of the window screen, her breath coming in short gasps as she contorted her body in a desperate bid for freedom. Limb by limb, she squeezed herself through the narrow opening, her heart pounding with adrenaline-fueled urgency.
She couldn't help but imagine how she must appear to any onlookers, a wild-eyed figure scrambling for escape from the tenth floor of a building.
Not today, not ever, she vowed silently to herself. She refused to allow him to capture her again, to subject herself to his torment.
Yet just as she began to feel the exhilarating rush of freedom, a sudden, terrifying force seized hold of her legs, dragging her back with a sickening inevitability.
