The College was established in 1880 by Charles Wesley Emerson as the Boston Conservatory of Elocution, Oratory, and Dramatic Art. Initially located in Boston's Pemberton Square, the institution underwent several relocations before settling in Boston's Theater District. In 1881, it was renamed the Monroe Conservatory of Oratory in honor of Professor Lewis B. Monroe, a mentor to Charles Wesley Emerson. Eventually, it was named Emerson College in 1939, a name that has since become synonymous with excellence in liberal arts education.
