In an effort to perfect his knowledge in the herbs he collects, Halfpelt turns his attention to the peculiar berries Shrewface kept hidden away before his untimely death. Nicknaming them "Redthorns," due to the appearance of the spiny twigs they grew on, Halfpelt dedicates his solitary time into discovering the effects of these strange herbs, to finish what his mentor began - dispelling the growing rumors that Shrewface was a dangerous cat that had lost his mind.

Firepaw proves himself worthy of becoming an apprentice. But life as a clan cat proves to be difficult and not just because it's winter and prey is scarce. His clan mates don't trust him, the deputy and some other warriors hate his guts, and many taunt and tease him for being a rogue in his past. Plus, there is lies and betrayal at every turn.
