It's not exactly illegal to be an Altered- those given abilities by a mutative virus called the Salient- but it means a life of secrecy.
Jake likes to consider himself a normal teenager. His goal for summer is getting a job and hanging out with Andres, his best friend.
But that's before he gets infected by the Salient.
Before his world is rocked by the disappearance of a man named Daniel Stockerton.
Suddenly, Jake is confronted by a stark dilemma: continue living in the shadows, or find a murderer.
To him, the answer's obvious, but there are greater forces at work, and when Alters begin vanishing all over the city, Jake realizes he may be the only one that can do anything about it.

My lungs and muscles burned. Everything in my body begging me to stop but I had to keep moving. I had to get away. I rather die than go back to that lab but this building was a maze!
