It's a hot summer in the city, it's 1774 and Charles is a rich, privileged man, always buying and selling. He gets what he wants, when he wants he even buys friends. The only hardship he ever faced in his life was when his wife died, he solved that by purchasing hookers to occupy his time which worked well. He was looking for more hookers in the streets of New York City, when suddenly he lays eyes on a person on the street and is immediately in love.

William is a peasant. He has lived on the street since he was eight and his life has always been a catastrophe. First, his mother died from typhoid flu, then, his father committed suicide due to the grief of his wife's death, and last, his grandfather died in one of the wars against the English. This means he was all alone on the streets of New York as a 23 year old man. This means that he has learnt how to defend himself, especially against rich people, who try to employ him to be a slave or a hooker.
