I could not help but to sink and just, sink into the ocean’s oblivion. My body, though wanting to surface cannot move. The treacherous waves kept on pulling me back under water. I am no swimmer and I feel like the ocean knows that. As if a predator, it knows I was just a prey. Sooner or later I’ll just succumbed to darkness for I can feel the water demanding entry inside my body. It wanted to fill my lungs and cart off the remaining air, and spirit I have in me. So painfully and slowly I can no longer hear my classmates who are on the boat calling out to me. My sight getting blurry and sore from the saltiness of the water. But before I finally drifted away from my own consciousness…someone bravely jumped from our boat to the dangerous waters and tried to pull me in to the surface with her small and delicate body. On that very exact moment, I have encountered a familiar mermaid by chance. | A sad contemporary twist to Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid. This story is inspired by Ningyo Ga Fuchi by Takagi Shigeyoshi. |All Rights Reserved
