Vivian, a young woman from Mosswick Village finds herself engaged to a local merchant with connections in Brighthaven at the arrangement of her father despite her protestations. Despairing at her fate; she wanders out of the village one night only to have a fateful encounter which would forever change her life. An older woman by the name of Evangeline enters Vivian's life that night and shows her that life can be so much more than she ever thought possible. Evangeline however is more than she seems and Vivian may find herself in for more than she bargained for.
