For twenty-year-old Arina Alderon, power means everything. She is a Princess of Tameron, but only in title. As a third-born daughter, she has no claim to the throne or army like her brothers-instead, Arina learned to navigate her life of isolation in the Iron Palace with only her own wits and will-power. As one of the nine royal Houses, her bloodline belongs to the highest rank of magically gifted demi-gods: the High Avari. But unlike the rest of her family, Arina was born without magic-condemning her to a life of misery at the bottom of the food chain. With the arrival of eligible princesses from across the Nine Realms to court her brother Tiberius, Arina is surrounded by even more formidable people, reminding her of her insignificance. Worse still, her mother demands that Arina marry one of the equally rich and insufferable suitors in Tameron's Court-leaving her more desperate than ever to find freedom. When fate intervenes and she meets Ren, the mortal guard now sworn to protect her, he offers her the chance to train her body and hone her mind to become more than just a powerless princess.

Amos University is a prestigious institute with a thousand years of history. Mage families send their sons to Amos to learn their craft, make connections with other families, and prepare for their future. Mixing magic and young men promises that no one year is boring. Club rivalries, hazing, and missed assignments can become a matter of life and death. But underneath it all there are predictable variables, controls placed over the students to prevent certain apocalyptic type events from happening. There are natural laws to magic which no mage can change or cross. Such as: all mages are male. In body or soul, every mage is male. Until Naena. A bastard from the Western Cape, Naena has spent the previous three years living on the streets. She is uneducated and lacking in certain social niceties. Her mother was once a maid to a mage family, learning a coded language as a young mage in the house did, but nothing else is known about the woman except her name. The men who find Naena are determined to keep her alive long enough to find out what her appearance means. The students are both wary and intrigued. While the faculty are forced to take on the first female mage in the history of the world, nothing says they need to help her with her studies. Or to stay alive.
