Malia Vander didn't mean to hurt her father. It was self-defense, but who listens to a 19-year-old girl anyways. She was supposed to be floated for her crime, but her uncle, chancellor Kane, requested the ark give her more time to live, to prove herself. When 100 criminals are chosen to be sent to the ground, she's sent along with them. After all, the ark couldn't keep her alive forever. The ground is a lot different than she expected, and so are the people. Especially a very secretive and intriguing Bellamy Blake.

In the process of all she deals with the pain of new kinds of love and being able to trust people after so many years of distrust.
