Maestro Series One: Enigma of Affection

"You know, Shan, you're the enigma of my affection." He muttered while looking down on the rooftop of our school.

"How so?" I replied. Looking at his side profile view, forming his sharpened jawline.

He looks at me intently with his black pearl eyes. "You're like a puzzle I can't solve. Every piece of you, every layer, it's all a beautiful mystery to me."

A saw him sigh deeply. I also saw him move his adam's apple as if there's something stuck in his throat. "But why keep this from me? Why hide your pain?"

I tried to say something, preventing myself to stutter. "Because I was afraid. Afraid that if you knew the truth, you would see me differently, that you would pity me."

"I could never pity you, Shan. I admire your strength, your courage to face each day with a smile, despite the darkness that looms over us." He said full of sincere and compassion.

Silence settles between us, heavy with the unspoken truth of my terminal illness.

I faced him. Smiled to him ear to ear with a bit of bitterness in my heart. "Rudz, maybe you're right. We are each other's enigma of affection. But some enigmas are destined to end in tragedy."

We share a final embrace, my heart breaking with the weight of our love, knowing that time is a cruel thief stealing our moments together.
