It all started with that Skyler Evans fainted. She fell down the stairs and needed blood because of the massive blood loss.
The easiest way to get the blood would be to get to the hospital to get some. To do that they had to check what blood type Skyler had. That was when she realized something was out of order.

Dan gets saved from an oncoming truck that would have taken his life if he wasn't pulled back at the last second. After being saved he suddenly can see numbers floating above everyone he passes by and quickly figured out that those numbers represent the lifespan of that person counting down in seconds.
