Hayley dies while being pregnant with Hope. Sophie, however, had a backup plan in case this ever happened and all she needed was the blood of a Petrova doppelgänger. When Hayley died, Hope was magically placed into Elena's womb. Klaus shut his humanity off after he learned of Hayley's death. He had thought his baby daughter had died with Hayley.
