The Kingdom of Taruschkan bleeds anew. Twenty-six years have passed since the Treaty of Arnoss, which many hoped would bring an end to the conflict between nations. Instead, the years between have been given nearly as much to war as they have to peace. The generations-long feud between the houses of Anaschen and Reschanant has entered its bloodiest and lengthiest period, calling upon all their alliances to settle once and for all who shall be pretender and who shall be king. As winter approaches, Prince Haeris Anaschen has withdrawn his armies into his family's ancestral stronghold of Mendolai; the House of Reschanant has resolved to strike in their enemies' absence. Among those cities still loyal to the Anaschen cause, Kaschar remains the mightiest. Kaschar: City of Bells and last refuge of a pacifist holy order known as the Dorimins, never taken by force. But now that a Reschanant army bears down on it led by Count Dorias Valatin, Taruschkan's mightiest fortress must hold out against its most fearsome commander.

The realm is fractured. With Prince Lucerys slain and the Iron Throne usurped by Aegon II, the war of succession has begun. Rhaenyra Targaryen, the rightful heir, turns north for strength. In Winterfell, Lord Cregan Stark, just twenty, is already hardened by snow, steel, and the weight of rule. To bind his loyalty, Rhaenyra offers him both a dragon and her daughter, Princess Daena Targaryen-rider of the dreaded Cannibal, a beast older and fiercer than any alive. Together, ice and fire will march south. But alliances forged in blood are as fragile as glass, and dragons are not the only creatures that can tear a kingdom apart. As betrayal festers and war ignites, Daena and Cregan must decide if honor, love, or vengeance will rule their hearts. The Dance of Dragons has begun.
