The events arise after Yennefer and Geralt argue over the third wish. In a reunion, the witcher isn't well received and the mage sends him, with Jaskier, through a portal to the present day. After time travel, both need to adapt to the new reality. Therefore, a new character, Janet, and a new creature appear.
