Bailey lives a seemingly normal, quiet life with his sister, Casey, in the secluded village of New Darkstead. Except Bailey and his sister aren't normal. They are seen as monsters by the townspeople, because of their strange appearances. Unlike his sister, Bailey prefers to stay out of sight. He assumes it will always be him and Casey against the world. But Casey soon drifts closer and closer to someone else, which Bailey fears will cause something terrible to happen. As he suspected, Casey makes a terrible mistake, and Bailey wonders if this is the excuse he's been waiting for to finally leave New Darkstead. But that hasn't happened yet. Everyday, in the generation before, starvation stabs at the stomachs of those who reside in Darkstead. Ruled by three divine embodiments, the needs of the people seem to be ignored. But when the widely-adored mayor perishes of hunger, it seems a revolution has started the brew. Piper, the mayors daughter, receives startling visions, and wonder if these sights can help keep the peace.
