This short story is about overcoming and not settling despite insecurities. Raised to believe the statements "if it ain't broke..." and "You stay where you are, do what we do, and that's just how it is," the narrator discovers a different way by understanding that the pains of life are not "just how it is," but what we choose for it to be.
