Joshua Hemingway, no relation to the author, lives in a town where status is everything. The women of Long Wood even have to follow a book of old tired rules that even he knows are ludicrous. He doesn't feel that he quite fits the part of the rich and famous, even though he enjoys a good party to go along with the alcohol. All this was even before the infamous Valentine family and his were put on their own reality TV show. Everything changes after that. Interviews, public appearances, and no privacy takes over his life. Through this he finds an unlikely friend, and possible romantic interest, that may feel just the way he does about Long Wood.
