Beans are nature's most perfect food. They are like tiny children waiting to be born. They can burst through the Spring soil and transform themselves into beanstalks that poke into the cloudlike homes of giants. Or if we're too anxious to wait for all that drama to unfold, we can simply eat them. We can eat them on a plate, in a bowl, on a knife, or a fork, or a spoon. Or maybe even in a soup with five or six mysterious beanlike stones that are also swimming in the gruel. The stones hide there hoping to inflict revenge on whoever tries to eat them.
