Set in 1993 in the small fictional town of Divinity, Missouri, Midnight Murders is the third person telling of the string of events and aforementioned murders which occur from late September to early November before a truly (italicized) burning resolve. The unfolding events center around the lives of Rhett Ortega, a depraved, off-putting 25 year old jerk who owns and butchers for Ortega Foods, his family deli. He stalks a man named Lapis Davis, who had been his lover 4 years prior and since then has installed a restraining order on the butcher due to consistent stalking and threats to his own safety. After Rhett brutally murders his father in self defense one cold September night, he begins to waver from sanity and slip into depravity. As people begin to go missing and Rhett's aggressive phone calls to Lapis become less of a bluff and more concerning actions, Divinity's residents only pretend to sleep in the twilight.

Seventeen-year-old Jeffrie Fortune is having a crappy winter break. First, there's the court hearing for beating up the guy that kissed her girlfriend a month prior. And then there's the whole issue of said girlfriend. But things quickly go from dramatic to dangerous when a stranger comes to town. Dressed in a top hat and donning a cane, the man with luminescent grey eyes is always wherever Jeffrie is. At the courthouse, outside her girlfriend's, and even at work. But when she finally demands he stop stalking her "like a creep," her crappy break is knocked on its ass. The man is Mr. Midnight, the Voice of Death. And he's here for her. However, Jeffrie soon learns Mr. Midnight isn't here for her soul. He's here to enlist her as a Death Agent - whatever the Hell that is. As she tries to not-so-politely refuse, Jeffrie discovers the ultimate truth: No one can deny Death forever.
