Sareb, an outcast shaman-mage, and Kuya, a warlord's son, could not be more different. Living alone in a cave, shunned by almost everyone, Sareb refuses to admit he needs anyone or anything. For Kuya, family is everything. He would do anything for his older sister, the heir to their father's steppe empire, poised on the brink of world conquest-although he harbors misgivings about their violent way of life.

When Sareb intervenes in an "accident" that leaves Kuya's sister's soul in limbo, the two are drawn into a quest from the desert sands to the northern steppe in search of her soul. As the stakes rise from one soul to clan rivalry to world war, a connection grows between the surly mage and the softhearted warrior. But Sareb has walled himself off after losing practically everyone that mattered to him, and he refuses to open up to one of the warrior elite who are to blame. For Kuya, the family name comes first, even before matters of the heart. For them to be together-not to mention stop the impending war-the entire world will have to change.
