Daemon did not like his wife. He married and bedded her out of duty and respect for his Grandmother. When his wife fell pregnant, he ceded all responsibility to her When twins were born and Daemon saw their features he turned his back on them completely. With the words, "Those are no dragons."

However, if he had waited merely a moon he would have seen them in their true forms. For the babe's who were born almost bald and who's eyes had yet to open, turned out to have the ethereal appearance that their Valyrian blood passed to all who carried it.
