In "To Be Seen," the story follows Serene, the youngest daughter in a family that values academic achievement highly. Even though Serene has excelled academically, her parents often make negative comparisons between her and his sibling, who is thought to be more intellectually talented. Serene feels invisible and devalued as a result of this continual comparison, with her successes being eclipsed by those of her brothers.

"To Be Seen" delves into Serene's want of acknowledgement and approval from her family. It explores the psychological costs associated with parental expectations and the effects of constantly comparing oneself to others. The novel explores themes of self-discovery and the need to be valued for one's unique qualities as Serene fights to be accepted for who she is.
