Lan Zhan has always found it difficult to express his feelings. If it weren't for his uncle Lan Qiren and his elder brother Lan Xichen, he would perhaps be derided as a retard. However Lan Zhan is gifted, a superb cultivator excelling in swordsmanship and musical cultivation. His autism has helped him stay focussed on things he can use to express himself in place of words. He has never been close to anyone outside his family and his clan, The Gusu sect of Jiangnan, never been in love and has always strived to be perfect. Rules, law, justice and etiquette meant the world to him. Everything gets thrown away when he meets a fellow cultuvator from Yunmeg. 

Wei Ying wasn't supposed to come to come to Gusu. He was not affiliated to any of the prominent families. His father was a servant of the Jiang clan. His mother was a rogue cultivator. The Jiang Clan Sect leader had taken him in when he was barely nine years old, both his parents dead. Since then he had shown an exceptional aptitude for cultivation becoming the head disciple of the Jiang clan, exceeding the heir Jiang Cheng and causing Madam Yu, Sect Leader Jiang's wife extreme displeasure. 

Wei Yang's temperament was the opposite of Lan Zhan. He made friends easily and took Madam Yu's abuse as well as Juang Cheng's jealousy in his stride. He was indebted to them for his upbringing and gave way to their unreasonable response to his excellence. What happens when Wei Ying's easy acceptance meets Lan Zhan's unwavering discipline? Every time LWJ is near WWX, he has visions of the events that occurred later in the novel such as the Cloud Recesses burning, WWX giving his golden core to JC, WWX being thrown into burial mounds and WWX becoming the YP. He approaches WWX this time and hopes that he can protect him but is rejected constantly. So he summons most of the cultivation world to tell them about the visions he had seen." So, when Wei WuXian returns after ab absence of about a month, returning just in time to aid in the wipeout of the Wen Clan using some odd form of cultivation, Lan Zhan realizes something is wrong. The previously outgoing boy has turned inwards on himself. He no longer makes jokes, he smiles when anyone is looking, but the smile drops when nobody is paying attention. He laughs, but Lan Zhan knows they are faked. He flinches away from anyone, and Lan Zhan is sure that he could hear screaming at some point during the night. He is no longer creating mischief and breaking rules, and was often found alone, staring blankly into the distance. The only people who could touch him without him backing away was Wen Ning...and him. Lan Zhan realized this when he had grabbed Wei Wuxian to keep him from storming out of a room, and instead of fighting him off as he did with everyone else, he calmed. Unnerved by the drastic change in personality, and, though unwilling to admit it, worried for the slightly younger boy, Lan Zhan gets his father and brother to convince the Jiang clan to let them take Wei Wuxian back to the Cloud Recesses, under the pretence of having him attend more training, as an official Disciple in a few more months. The Jiang clan eagerly agreed, as such an opportunity was ra early given. Lan Zhan soon realizes, however, that Wei Wuxie went through far more than he was telling anyone, and that, just perhaps, Lan Zhan may be beginning to feel attracted to the boy.
