The Bakiga Tribe is found in the magnificent Kigezi hills in southwestern Uganda. Back in the 1950s, young girls from the Bakiga tribe who would lose their virginity before marriage and end up being pregnant would be taken to the small island on Lake Bunyonyi which is the second deepest lake in Africa and the third deepest in the world.
The small island locally known as Akapeene which means a place of punishment consumed many lives of young girls and their unborn babies some of whom would be victims of rape. Every girl had to guard her virtue which older men would then strip away.
HYMEN is a story based on true events told through the eyes of Maria, a young beautiful girl, the only child of her father who only saw her as a gift from the gods and a means of riches. In this story, we get to experience the horror, pain, torture, and love cut short that the girls experienced.
