Varya wants nothing more than to protect her family. The fact that her family consists of seven dragons is immaterial to this point. Humans are trouble--herself included--though she can't deny a certain curiosity about the people she was born to. So when her father goes missing, captured by dragon hunters encroaching further and further into the secluded mountains where they live, she must turn to the first human she has seen in nigh on a decade to ensure her family's safety.

Jaxen wants nothing more than to prove his worth as a mage. His mentor, the Grand Court Mage of Glennkade, has told him for years that he is simply not living up to his potential. This is a point she attempts to prove by sending him into the wilderness to fend for himself with little but his magic to aid him--with mixed success. But when the girl who saved his life out in the mountains calls on him for help with a dying mother and missing father, he finds himself wrapped up in a plot--and a war--that spans species and generations.
