Harry Potter is... well, Harry Potter. That is enough to make his aunt, uncle, and cousin despise his mere presence. Punishments grew unfair, cruel, and violent while rewards and praise grew thin, meek, backhanded, and rare. Severus Snape is... well, Severus Snape. That's enough for him to have basic human empathy.
